本を選んでおいて言うのも何ですが、今回は杉本は杉
本でも杉本章子を読もうとしたはずなのですが、つい
杉本苑子を手に取ってしまいました。杉本苑子は当り
外れがないと私は思っているせいなのですね。いや、
杉本章子が当り外れがあるというわけでもないのです
が。本書は古代を舞台にした短篇ばかり。七篇収録。

古志老人が腹を痛めてうめいていたとき、通りかかっ
た若い医師佐伯真束が救ってくれた。何もないあばら
屋に医師とその助手を泊めて話を聞くと、彼は唐の国
に近々渡るつもりだと言う・・・・・

「一夜の客」

桑田王子の子を加奈手が産んだ日に、桑田王子は死ん
だ。長屋王の変に巻き込まれて。加奈手は娘桑児を兄
の子として育てることにした・・・・・

「杖」

幼女のころから、花児はひどく愛らしい子だった。た
だ、柿の木から落ちたときから、足が不自由になって
しまった・・・・・

「花児とその兄」

古代が舞台と言っても、登場人物たちの話し方は現代
風。地の文もとくに古風というわけでもありません。
たまたま舞台が古代にしてあるだけのことと思っても
いいようです。ただ、いかにもその当時でなければあ
りえないような、税の出役とか貢物に苦しむ村人の様
子はたしかに古代独特のもの。

『こんな理不尽が、あってよいのか。許されてよいの
か』

「長屋王家が滅亡した日、私は産所で苦しんでいた」

『今日あすのうちに息絶えるじゃろ。なまじ食いもの
など口にしとうはない』

『前生からの宿業だったのであろう』

「笹鳴き」では野垂れ死にしかかっている老婆の、最
後の話を旅人が聞き取るという形で、この残酷さを平
然と記すあたりがまさに現代の語り部。子が母親を裏
切り、その母親が命をかけて子を守る。守るそのやり
方が人道に外れている。そのため死を受け入れる老婆。
この連鎖は、たしかに母親が死ぬことによってしかあ
がなえない。

「花児とその兄」のエンディングは予想外。まさかこ
ういう仕掛けがあろうとは思いもしませんでした。考
えたら「杖」でも似たような仕掛けを主人公にさせて
いるわけなので、こうしたエンディングを予想できた
はずでした。つい主人公に肩入れしすぎました。

あまり明るいエンディングはないですが、最後の「傷
痕」だけは、人間の到達する極致を表し、これは感動
的。

今日は子どもの幼稚園が突然お休み、何の休みなのかさっぱりわからない。
昨日のサラスワティパンチャミの振り替え?

子どもの風邪を貰って、今度は夫がダウン。
私の言うことを聞かないので、ほっといたらかなり酷いことに。
二晩ほどうなされて、熟睡できてない。
昔一度ホメオパシーレメディーをあげたら、
アグラベーション(好転反応の一時的悪化)が起こって、
これはヒット!なんだけど、それ以来、ホメオパシーは病気を悪化させると刷り込まれ、
粒のものは飲まなくなった。

梅醤番茶と味噌汁は身体が欲するらしいので作ってあげた。
身体が酸性になってるのだろう。
風土が違ってもネパール人もこれは効果を実感できるらしい。



昼間はなんとか平気でも夜に発熱する(昼間おとなしく寝ていないから)
のはなんかおかしな病気かも?
と田舎のお父さんに電話して、薬草「ニーム」の生葉を送ってもらった。

輸送方法は、実家の前を通る長距離路線バスの運転手に託して、
名前とバスの番号を控え、カトマンドゥのバス停に受け取りに行くという方法。
宅急便の代わりにいつもこうやって利用する。
お礼に100ルピーくらい渡せば喜んでしてくれる。


電気が来るのをまってから、ニームの葉に水を加えてミキサーにかけ、ざるで漉して青汁に。
葉っぱをかじってみたら、強烈に苦い!
青汁はもっと苦い!
えづきながらでも飲んでた。
今はヒンディー映画をみて笑い転げているからもう大丈夫そう。



確かにこれだけ苦けりゃ相当身体には良いに違いない。
新鮮だし。アーユルベーダの長い歴史もあるし。
ニームは地球を救う大きな可能性を秘めた植物として注目されてきている。
ニームドリンクでも開発してみようか?

こんな過去がかつて日本にもあったのに。それもすぐ近

本書は文楽の三味線弾きの名手・露沢徳兵衛を主人公
にした長篇小説。ところが、徳兵衛自身を描くのでは
なく、徳兵衛の後妻に入ることになる、茜という女性
の一代記になっているのです。この辺が、さすがに有
吉佐和子らしいところ。私自身は文楽も義太夫もさっ
ぱりわかりませんが、芸に生き、芸に死んだすさまじ
さをこれくらい痛烈に描いた小説も珍しい。   

茜は東京角筈の富裕な商家に生まれた一人娘で、少女
のときに目を患ってしまう。不憫におもう両親は娘の
良縁をさがし見合いをすすめるのだが、父親の急死で
中断する。母親は下田に「みすや」という旅館を開業
する。茜には、少女のころに聞いた文楽の三味線がず
っと耳に響いていた。清太郎(のちの徳兵衛)の三味
線の音である。

やがて目がなおって見た清太郎は美しく、茜はその容
貌に驚くが、胸に深く刻まれるのはむしろ三味線の音。
茜は巡業先の大垣に清太郎を訪ね、抱かれることにな
る。が、清太郎には妻がいた。二人はしばらく離れた
ままになる。そこに偶然がくる。ひとつは清太郎が常
連客に連れられて「みすや」に泊まったこと、もうひ
とつは清太郎の妻が先立ったことである。こうして茜
は清太郎の後妻として嫁ぐのだが、そこには九人もの
子供がいた・・・・・

どうやら、徳兵衛という人物は四代目鶴澤清六がモデ
ルのようです。終盤の文楽界を揺るがせた大事件も実
際にあったことのようですが、まるっきり事実そのま
まかと言うと、いささか虚実入り混じっているようで、
フィクションと思ったほうがいいようです。まあそれ
にしても、真に迫っておりますが。

前半の、茜という大店のお嬢さんぶりには驚きました。
大正時代の、お嬢さんってのはこんなのでしたか。も
うそりゃあ徹底した世間知らず。考えもなしに徳兵衛
に会いに行ってしまうところもそうですが、その日常
すべてが今では信じられないような「お嬢様」。これ
がそのまま年を重ねて行くわけです。お嬢様はいくら
年をとってもお嬢様。

「自分がお嬢さん芸で習っている琴などは十三本の糸
を一時に掻き鳴らしても、あの一の糸一筋には敵わな
いではないか」

『母さま、それじゃ何をしたらいいのよォ。退屈で死
んでしまいそうだわ』

「終戦の前の月まで語り続け、弾き続け、遣り続けて
きたのは文楽の人間だけであった」

『二の糸が切れても、一の糸で二の音を出せば出せる。
そやけども、一の糸が切れたときには』

この徳兵衛というキャラクターがもう今では死滅した
芸人でしょう。こんな芸人いるとは思えません。ある
意味痛烈な「日本人」を描いたとも言えます。世間的
なことは何もできない男なのに、孤高を保ち、ただひ
たすら三味線を弾き続ける。

こんな男をそれこそ一筋に愛しぬく茜。これも稀有な
日本人。というか消え去った日本人像。文楽という狭
い世界を描きながら、なぜだか、哀切極まりない。こ
んな過去がかつて日本にもあったのに。それもすぐ近
くに。

それ以上接近するには金足らず

本書は「千夜一夜物語」の翻訳ではなくて、著者がイ
スラム世界を紹介しながら、短篇連作の形式でお話を
つづるという形式になっています。全22話。バステ
ィーシュではなくて、案外まじめな小説。

アイシャは17歳、村のガラス職人のハサンとは結婚
を約束した仲だった。アイシャの織った美しい絨毯が、
王妃の目にとまった・・・・・

「絨毯織りのアイシャの物語」

サラームが16歳になった時、養ってくれた叔父さん
が死んだ。サラームは国で第一の大きな街に着いた。
そこで最後のお金を水パイプに払った・・・・・

「水パイプの中の恋と冒険の物語」

占い師がアリーに、37人目の女こそが妻となって幸
せに結ばれる相手だと言った。一方、アーミナが会っ
た占い師は、最初の男こそ生涯を共にする男だと言う
のだった・・・・・

「運命の恋人に出逢うまでの色の道修行の物語」

題名でみんな語りつくしているようなお話ですね。元
のアラビアンナイトが実際そうですし。思えば、あれ
ほど有名なアラビアンナイト。全部読みきったことは
ありません。一時、挑戦してみたのですが、あまりに
長くて途中で降参。

本書は全部で290ページ。アラビアンナイトのいい
とこ取りです。それにしては、アラジンもシンドバッ
ドも出てきません。もっともこの超有名な物語が出て
くると、たったそれだけで終わってしまいます。

「帯のように見えたのは、海峡を渡る蝶の群だったの
だ」

『ぼくが来たからには、きみを魔鬼なんかに食べさせ
はしない』

『三人を合わせたよりひどい苦しみですと』

『おれは何百年も生きているコウノトリの王だ』

知っているようで知らないイスラム世界の歴史と実情。
それをエッセイ風に書き出しながら、いつの間にか、
小説になってしまう。なかなか洒落た構成です。そう
そう、もとよりアラビアンナイトは、シェヘラザード
が語る不思議な物語という発端になっていたはずです
が、これも本書では割愛されています。むろん、これ
だけでもずいぶん長かったはず。

気楽に読んでいるうちに、イスラム世界の知識が増す。
たとえば、第19話の「摩天楼」のお話など、イエメ
ンに実際にある高層建築のことなのですね。これも、
私は調べてみて初めて知りました。少しずつ読んで、
長く楽しめる本です。

本書は、ある意味タイムリーな読書ではなかろうかと
自賛しています。宇宙人襲来、なんて聞くとそれだけ
で、なあんだ、と思われそうな安っぽいSFのようで
すが、御大小松左京が、そんなくだらないものを書く
はずもありません。本書が書かれたのは、1968年。
中国が国連に加盟しておらず、日中の国交も樹立して
いない時代。あれから40年、四川省の地震への対応
を見るかぎり、中国はそれほど変化していないのでは
と思ったのでした。

中国の奥地の高原で内戦が起きている、というタス通
信の記事から始まった。「いつもの内戦」と無視する
記者が多い中で、山崎記者は興味もって調べ始めた。
内戦にしては戦闘規模が大きいと判断した米軍も本格
調査を始めた。中国は報道規制を行い、何も情報が得
られないまま戦闘はソ連国境まで拡大しつつあった。

山崎は空路でソ連入りを果たそうとするが、飛行機は
戦闘の最前線に不時着してしまった。生き残った記者
が見たのは 地上をうごめく、多数の巨大なドームの
ような物と中国軍の戦闘だった。戦線は、ソ連国境へ
拡大し、米ソは戦略核ミサイルの使用をめぐって、駆
け引きを始めるのだった・・・・・

四川省の地震、いささか報道にタイムラグがあった。
そんなことを、今では問題に誰もしない。隠せるもの
ならなるべく隠しておきたい、という中国当局の意志
が感じられたと思うのは眇めでしょうか。もはや隠し
きれるものではない、とはっきりしてから、大々的に
報道が始まった。これが自然災害だから、まだ報道が
明快だったのではないでしょうか。一例を挙げると、
チベット暴動の報道は、あけっぴろげだとは誰も思っ
ていない。

彼の国は依然として報道管制が敷かれている。40年
前と異なるのは、ネットの存在くらいなもの。そのネ
ットでさえ規制したのを忘れてはなりません。本書で
宇宙人が襲来したのが中国奥地なのが、なんとも皮肉。

『中国奥地で、なにか起っている・・・』

『これは演習ではありません。きわめて大規模な本格
的で、激烈な戦闘です』

「ユーラシア内陸での中ソ衝突が起れば起ったで、米
国はかえって漁夫の利をしめることになる」

「砂塵におおわれているにもかかわらず、それをひと
目見た瞬間、なにかいい知れぬ恐怖と嫌悪が口の中に
こみあげてきた」

文中、「中国首脳は、これはあくまで中国領土内で起
った問題であり、したがって、あくまで中国の国内問
題である、という見解に固執しています」と書かれて
いる。これ、まったく同じ内容を最近聞いた覚えはあ
りませんか。

宇宙人の襲来にしては、宇宙人の姿がまるで見えませ
ん。それというのも、宇宙人がどうのこうのという前
に、もしもこんなパニックが起ったら、国際政治は外
交は軍事はいったいどういう局面を迎えるか、という
のがメインのテーマだからでしょう。その意味では、
「日本沈没」と同じ手法。

それでも著者はまだまだ楽観的な未来シミュレーショ
ンをしているほうで、米ソにこれほど立派な指導者が
いれば幸いですし、中国に革命が起るというのも楽天
的。実際はもっと混沌としてしまうのではないでしょ
うか。壮大なテーマのわりには、小説は短すぎで尻切
れトンボ。小説的には不発ですが、内容はものすごい。

ああ無事に生きているんだ奇跡です

An Outline of the Divisions at the Graduate School for
International Development and Cooperation (IDEC)
Developmental cooperation, focusing on developing countries in Asia, should be perceived as the highest
priority in Japan’s overall responsibility to make an international contribution. Along with Japanese students, the
Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) actively accepts foreign students, especially
from Asia. The School helps students gain special knowledge to enable them to perform activities in the field of
international cooperation, as well as develop the general judgmental abilities to form human resources with leadership
capability.
IDEC features two divisions: The Division of Development Science and The Division of Educational
Development and Cultural and Regional Studies. In order to pursue both general knowledge and specialized
understanding in one’s academic field, three courses in the Division of Development Science and two courses in the
Division of Educational Development and Cultural and Regional Studies have been established. These main subjects help
deepen the student’s understanding in a particular area. At the same time, the curriculum of common subjects and other
courses also enables the student to acquire a broad base of knowledge and skills.
In 2003, the research and educational program, “Social Capacity Development for Environmental Management
and International Cooperation” proposed by IDEC (Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation),
Hiroshima University, was selected as one of the 21st Century COE (Center of Excellence) programs. The 21st Century
COE programs are supported by the Monbukagakusho of the Japanese Government, in order to increase the international
competitivity of Japanese universities, by the formation of world-class research and educational centers in various subject
areas.
Division of Development Science
The Division of Development Science nurtures those specialists who contribute to creating sustainable society in
developing countries in social, economic and environmental aspects, namely professionals for international institutions
and aid-providing organizations, administrators and academic researchers. The division offers courses on various issues on
economic development, socio-political and peace studies, environmental management, infrastructure planning and design,
and biological resources development. The courses are designed to provide a systematic and efficient teaching and
research by utilizing an integrated approach to the social and natural sciences and methodology.
1) Development Policy:
The students of the Development Policy Course study economics and related social science methodologies and policy
applications with a focus on sustainable development in developing countries. The Course is designed to develop
student’s ability to analyze socioeconomic problems that accompany the development process, such as poverty,
environment and economic stability, and to explore how to prescribe economic policies and aid coordination in order to
tackle these problems in practice. The program seeks to train professionals with advanced skills, administrators, and
researchers capable of improving the development process through international cooperation.

2) Development Technology:
We conduct research and education, from an international perspective, related to a variety of technologies that can
facilitate sustainable development, based upon our knowledge of the local environment within a particular country. More
specifically, our focus upon developing countries, primarily in Asia, includes the following areas: disaster prevention,
urban and regional planning, marine development and usage, development of environmental monitoring methodology,
ecosystem conservation and management, and biological resource development and usage.
3) Peace and Coexistence:
The Peace and Coexistence course explores routes to realizing peace from the perspectives of politics, society, and law
through research and coursework addressing problems that accompany modernization and economic development and
issues related to the outbreak of regional conflict and recovery following such conflict. Coursework and research include
researches on topics as follows: politics and international relations in South Asia; international relations in East Asia;
theory of ethnic and language conflict; security and human security in former Soviet countries; regionalism; Japanese
foreign policy; peace building in post-conflict societies; conflict analysis and its resolution.
Division of Educational Development and Cultural and Regional Studies
This division takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying issues of development planning and ways of mutual
exchange between Japan and other Asian countries, focusing on the various regional cultural characteristics and the
dynamics of development. Along with historical and cultural relations and methods of interaction between people from
different cultures, this division studies the development of educational systems that promote sustainable cultural
development and international understanding. These diverse topics are studied from the perspective of international
educational and cultural cooperation.
1) Educational Development:
Educating next generation of the society is an essential part of achieving sustainable development in the developing
world. In specific terms, some of the most urgent imperatives include establishing and maintaining schools, building a
functioning educational system and training human who can manage the system, and education both current and future
teachers. The Educational Development Course is actively working toward educational development in developing
countries through theoretical and practical research in the field of human resource development, educational system and
curriculum development, etc. We are also conducting projects funded by JICA in Zambia and Bangladesh.
2) Cultural and Regional Studies:
For the Cultural and Regional Studies course, the most pressing issue is to deepen understanding of the culture and
society of Asia while articulating the dynamics such as friction, discord, and transformation that occur when different
cultures come into contact with one another. Courses particularly emphasize the need for a precondition for international
cooperation and development assistance, and careful examination of primary and local sources. The Cultural and
Regional Studies course leverages approaches including multicultural communication, rural economics, cultural
anthropology, literature, and history in an attempt to gain an organic understanding of the societies being researched.

In order to be considered for admission, applicants must fall under one of the following selection categories.

Selection as Intern (refer to “Preliminary Evaluation of Admission Requirements”)
On top of meeting one of the stipulations below, the applicant must have at least two years of full-time work
experience as an employee, official, or teacher in a private company, international organization, governmental
organization, local government, or educational organization by the time the prospective student enters IDEC. Also,
they must have more than one year’s in a field related to international cooperation.

# Validity of English Test Score
IDEC accepts only official score documents issued by the relevant organization (not copies) of
the examination you took within 2 years before the entrance examination.
# Special Information Regarding the Japanese Examination
Examinees for the “Selection as Intern” or “Selection as Professional Associate” categories may
bring one Japanese language dictionary of book type to the examination.
2. Oral Examination (Interview)
Details will be posted on the day of the examination. Depending on the number of applicants, the persons
eligible for the oral exam will be selected based on the results of the written exam. The candidates eligible to
take the oral exam will be officially announced at 9 a.m. on the day of the interview.
3. Applicant Assessment
(1) Evaluating Examinations
· Applicants will be assessed comprehensively based on the results of an entrance examination (written and oral
examinations) by the Evaluation Criteria below.
· However, applicants falling under the Special Selection for Senior Citizen category will be evaluated by the
results of an oral examination (interview).

Ⅵ. An explanation of the “special exception” educational path presented in Article 14 of the Graduate School
Establishment Criteria
The purpose of Article 14 of the Graduate School Establishment Criteria is to supply more convenient study plans
for incoming Intern and Professional Associate students. Measures for the special exception prescribed by Article 14
are as follows:
1. Courses will be held on weekday evenings (from 6:40-8:10 p.m.), as well as in the middle of long vacation periods,
such as the summer recess, on a short-term basis (intensive courses).
2. Prospective students who wish to apply for this “special exception” course should state this clearly in their
entrance application form and oral examination, and sufficiently recognize the conditions this places on their
studies.
3. This “special exception” course is initiated during the first and second years of study. Each year, a maximum of
four credits can be completed via “special exception courses (a maximum of eight credits over two years).

 ホーチミン市中心部で日系企業に一番人気は、Nguyen Hue通りにあるSun Wah Towerです。ここにはホーチミン日本商工会や日本貿易振興機構(ジェトロ)ホーチミン事務所が入っています。サービス業の企業にとっては、このビルにオフィスを構えることがひとつのステータスともなっています。 その他のビルでは、Saigon Centerなど中心部に近いビルが好まれます。
 実際にオフィス探しをしてみると、現状ではどこもほぼ満室で希望のビルに入るのは難しくなっています。順番待ちという制度はないようで、空きがあれば最初に手付金を払った会社が契約できることになります。条件に合った空いているオフィスがあったら直ぐに手付金を払わないと、他の企業に押さえられてしまいます。本社の認可を待っていると、また振り出しに戻ってしまうかもしれません。
 また、ローカルの運営するオフィスビルは非常に安いです。中心部から離れたところで20㎡くらいの物件だと月150ドルくらいで借りられます。ただし、サービスは価格相応です。

ニュース(VBPニュースより) ● REE冷蔵機電社、2か所目のeタウン建設へ
 REE冷蔵機電株式会社は先頃、リース用オフィスビル「e.Town2」建設プロジェクトに投資することを明らかにした。このビルは11階建て、リース面積2万6,200m2で、現在のe.Townビルの近くに建設される予定(HCM市Tan Binh区)。投資
額1,600万USDのうち自己資金は500万USD、残りは新株式の発行と銀行からの借り入れでまかなう。今年の7月に着工、18か月後に竣工の見込み。

● HCM市:35階建てオフィスビルプロジェクトに投資許可
 HCM市人民委員会は4月4日、Vietcombank-Bonday-Ben Thanh有限合弁会社に対し、35階建てオフィスビルプロジェクトの投資許可書を発給した。このビルは同市1区のMe Linhスクエア5番地に建設される。
このプロジェクトは、ベトナム外商銀行(Vietcombank)、Ben Thanh観光サービス社、香港のBonday Investmentsグループによる合弁で、ベトナム側2社が約70%の資本金を出
資する。2006年6月に着工し、2008年8月に供用を開始する予定。

● HCM市:Asiana Plazaプロジェクト 国内企業のみで継続の意向
 HCM市人民委員会は先頃、同市1区の面積1万3,600m2の地区で予定されている商業・ホテル・オフィスセンタープロジェクト(Asiana Plazaプロジェクト)の実施を国内企業で継続する意向を
明らかにした。このプロジェクトは投資額2億2,300万USDで、Kumho建設企業グループとSaigon観光公社(サイゴンツーリスト)との合弁で進める計画だったが、1997年のアジア金融危機発生により8年間ストップしたままになっていた。
 同市人民委員会は、合弁企業のベトナム側パートナーであるサイゴンツーリスト経営会議議長に、Kumho所有株(65%)をベトナム側に譲渡するよう交渉する権限を委任した。Kumho側が引き続き不動産分野への投資を希望する場合、人民委員会は別の地域を紹介する意向だ。

● ベトナムのA級オフィススペース賃貸料 バンコクの2倍
 CB Richard Ellis不動産管理・マーケティング社は3月29日、不動産市場の観察結果を明らかにした。それによると、ベトナムのA級オフィススペースの賃貸料(1平方メートル/月当たり)はHCM市が27USD、Ha Noi市が26USDとシ
ンガポール(29USD)並であるのに対し、バンコクは14USD、マニラ及びクアラルンプールは10USDとベトナムの半額以下の価格設定になっている。
 同社によると、HCM市のA級オフィススペースのリース率は100%に達しており、供給が追いつかない状態だ。同社はまた、今後数年はB級オフィススペースの需要が高まると予測している。

● HCM市:60階建てのオフィス商業センタービルを建設へ
 HCM市人民委員会のLe Thanh Hai委員長は2月2日、同市1区に建設が予定されているオフィス商業センタービル建設プロジェクトに関する会議に出席した。このビルはBinh Minh生産・経営・輸出入社が9,600
万USDを投じて建設する。地上60階、地下6階建てで、地下は駐車場、地上4階まではショッピングセンターやショールーム、5階以上はオフィスや会議場にする計画。今年4月30日に着工、施工期間は30か月を予定している。Hai委員長は会議の席で、同ビルが独特な建築デザインであることや100%国内資本によるプロジェクトである点を評価した。

● HCM市:ソフトウエアパークでJVPE Gatewayビルがオープン
 Than Ho社は12月24日、HCM市のQuang TrungソフトウエアパークにJVPE Gateway(Japan
Vietnam Portal for Engineering Gateway)ビルをオープンした。JVPEビルは情報技術(IT)企業の業務に適する近代的設備を備えており、日系企業及び日本市場向けのソフトウエアを生産する能力のある企業向けのオフィスビルとなっている。既に床面積の50%はリース済み。
 Than Ho社はまた、この2年間HCM市工科大学と協力してIT専攻学生約100人に無料で日本語を教育してきた。同ビルで活動する企業には、日本語に流ちょうなIT技術者50人を供給することができる。

新潮社のクレスト・ブックでは現代英米文学の質の高
さを教えてもらいますが、この著者ウィリアム・トレ
ヴァーは英文学の短篇の名手として紹介されています。
全十二篇。短篇の上手い人ってのは、人生の切り口を
見せるという方法を取るものですが、この作家の方法
論は少し異なっている。大胆に時間を使いこなす。

夫の死んだ日に、ゲラティー姉妹がやって来た。もち
ろん彼の死んだことを知らないで。姉妹は中年で独身
だった。エミリーもよく知らないし、会ったこともな
かった・・・・・

「死者とともに」

劇場のバーで待ち合わせをした。イーヴリンは小さい
頃から、約束の時間に遅れないというのが強迫観念に
なっていた。やがて男がやって来た。こうして会って
みると、あまり意外な感じはしなかった・・・・・

「夜の外出」

ローズの家で家庭教師のブーヴェリー先生をディナー
に呼んだ。先生にとってローズは最後の生徒だった。
ブーヴェリー先生の家には、若い男が出入りしていた。
先生は何も知らない・・・・・

「ローズは泣いた」

いったい何が特徴的なのだろうか。しばらく考えてや
っとわかりました。ここには作家自身が姿をまったく
見せていない。小説というものは、どこかに作家の影
が現れるものですが、ここにはそれを極力排した痕が
見られます。登場人物たちの思いや感情は表されてい
ても、それを描いている作家は徹底して奥に隠れてい
る。

これは簡単なことではない。よほどの手練手管に長け
た作家にしかできません。また、ストーリーを通して、
何かを主張するというあざとさをも極力避けている。
ほんの二十ページの中に、登場人物の全人生が読者に
はわかる。いや、わかると錯覚してしまう。その意味
で読者をいい気持にしてしまうのですね。

「あの人たちは善意で来てくれたのだ、とエミリーは
もう一度自分に言い聞かせた」

「正直な話、道理も何もまったく理解できない娘なの
だ」

「これで終わりにしよう。もちろん、失望はするだろ
うが、ほっとするかもしれない」

「私はとうとう、自分には、語りたいことを語るとい
う救いが与えられないのだとあきらめた」

「普通」というのがいったい何を指すのか。一見普通
に見える人々が、どんなに奇妙なのか。まったく見知
らぬ同士が知り合う物語「夜の外出」などは、男の卑
しさに比べ、女性の神々しさが心を打ちます。「聖像」
に出てくる妻の何気なさにも惚れ惚れします。

十二篇どれも好きですが、もっとも気に入ったのが、
「ダンス教師の音楽」。たった一度聞いただけの音楽
を一生心に刻み付けた女性ブリジッド。本書を読んだ
人は、それぞれお気に入りの物語をきっと見つけるで
しょう。決して波乱万丈の物語はそこにはないのに、
ずっと心に残ることは間違いありません。
